WINE OF THE WEEK - 2019 Zenato Lugana San Benedetto
Hi Friends! I’m super far behind this week and I can’t seem to catch up because I’m actually behind on last week! Do you ever have weeks like this? I’m looking for a friend here! :)
So, this week’s Wine of the Week review is much shorter than usual because it’s coming a week late and I actually need to get working on the current week’s selection and review. Eeep! If you are new to this blog and want to know more about my weekly Wine Wednesday feature, be sure to read this blog post where I outline my approach to my weekly Wine Wednesday picks.)
And with that, let’s get into this week’s pick!
2019 Zenato Lugana San Benedetto
This week’s wine comes from a region you may not have heard of before, and from a grape that you also may not have heard of. But it’s delicious so I think it’s worth your time. Read on to learn more!
What does this wine cost?
$19.95
Where does this wine come from?
This wine comes from the Lugana region of Italy, which is on the southern side of Italy’s largest lake, Lake Garda. This region has its own DOC status and exclusively makes white wines. The native grape variety that is in this week’s wine is Turbiana (also known as Trebbiano di Lugana).

Who makes this wine?
This wine is produced by Zenato, a well established and well regarded winery in the Veneto. Established in 1960 with a focus on Lugana, this family owned and operated winery is today owned and operated by the founders children and has expanded to include Valpolicella wines as well. The Zenato name is famous for the promotion of indigenous varieties and synonymous with quality.

A few Wine Geek “essential facts” about the wine (feel free to skip this if you don’t care about detailed wine-making information!):
Variety - 100% Turbiana
Soil type - clay
ABV - 13%
Residual Sugar - 7 g/L
My tasting notes:
This bright, clear wine is a pale yellow colour in the glass, with flecks of green. It’s aromas are sweet and compelling, like an apple orchard lined with white flowers or a bowl of ripe mango hunks. On the palate, the wine is zingy and clean, with notes of lemon curd, pineapple and ginger. The finish is long, zesty and satisfying. You can practically taste the sun and sandy shores that surround the vines that this wine originates from!
Aging potential:
N/A - drink this wine now.
Recommendations to Wineitupanotch:
Pair this wine with grilled fish, white sauce pizza, seared scallops or a goat cheese salad.
Wineitupanotch Wine Score: 90 points
This is such a fun and delicious wine that takes you off the beaten track and into some of Italy’s lesser known varieties and regions. And if you can’t travel there, at least you can taste wine from there! I think this wine is perfect for warm, patio weather and long days at the beach or on the cottage dock.
If you’re located in Ontario, and wish to purchase this wine, you can find it at the LCBO under Product #707158.
FINAL VERDICT:
Buy this, drink it and enjoy life! You’re sure to enjoy this wine and it’s such a fantastic price point. Once you’ve tried it, be sure to let your wine geek friends know about your off-the-beaten-track new wine discovery! :))
If you’ve tried this wine already, or decide to pick it up and try it after reading this post, I’d love to hear from you and hear what you think of it! Please do drop me a line.
